Gaultheria Grow Care Wintergreen

Wintergreen, also known as gaultheria, is a compact evergreen best known for glossy leaves, red berries and good performance in acidic, moisture-retentive soil. It is not a classic hot-sun Costa del Sol plant, but it can work in shaded patios, protected planters and cooler microclimates.

Best conditions for wintergreen

  • Bright shade or filtered light rather than exposed afternoon sun.
  • Acidic, organic-rich soil that stays lightly moist without waterlogging.
  • Protection from drying coastal wind and reflective heat from paving.
  • Container growing if the native soil is too alkaline.

Care routine for sheltered patios and planters

Watering
Keep the root zone evenly moist and reduce stress during dry weather.
Mulching
Use pine bark or another acidic mulch to help keep soil structure stable.
Feeding
Use a mild feed suited to acid-loving plants rather than heavy fertilising.
Pruning
Trim lightly after damaged or tired growth appears; avoid hard cuts into woody stems.

Common problems

Most failures come from heat stress, alkaline soil or containers that dry too quickly. If foliage loses colour or growth stalls, move the plant to gentler light and improve the soil mix before adding more fertiliser.
